One of the international guest speakers at a free one-day public astronomy symposium hosted by the University of Aucklands’ Faculty of Science. Dr Jack Lissauer, from NASA Ames Research Center (US), spoke about the search for habitable extrasolar planets and what they’ve found so far. Note his very cool Kepler cap!

Two friends walk past The Palace on Victoria Street, opposite Sky City Casino, during rush hour in the afternoon. An area of town once lined on both sides of the street with historic buildings like this one, this part of Victoria Street now houses the casino and the resolute presence of the architecture that preceded it.

A man walks past “My Top Six Drinks”, one of the many stores of its kind to proliferate during the past few years. This one is in the old Theatre Centre block, opposite the Civic Theatre, that used to house the St. James Theatre and a row of video game arcades. Most of it is now dedicated to restaurants, kebab shops and tea houses like this one.

A mannequin stares out the same window of the old El Jay store onto Kingston Street, opposite the Auckland District Court, wearing the same Christian Dior dress she’s had on for years.

From 1954-1988, Gus Fisher, whose name is most known to the public for the Art Gallery he founded, produced clothing made under licence from Christian Dior, in Paris, under the
name El Jay.

His work has been the subject of more than one retrospective show, and the window of this building, left unchanged for many years, is often subject to longing stares by both fashionistas and the nostalgia hungry who pass by.

One of Auckland’s homeless playing a harmonica for bus money to Ponsonby. This photo was taken on new year’s day, about 6am on lower Queen Street. He was friendly and in good spirits “I’m just grateful they left me in peace” he said about the raucous party people celebrating throughout the night.
