Auckland City and the surrounding suburbs have several buildings belonging to The Auckland Electric Power Board that are Art Deco in Design. They can be found in various places throughout central Auckland. This particular one sits on the Eastern side of the beginning of Tamaki Drive, and was built, as the sign states, just after the Second World War.

The sign for Ima glows orange as the afternoon sun filters through its stained glass canopy. This middle eastern resturant used to be Ima Cuisine on Shortland street but moved down to Fort Street a few years ago. Ima and Ibn is its full name, being mother in hebrew, to reflect its Israeli roots and Ibn, meaning son in arabic, for the new Palestinian partner.

Two security guards at the front door of Hotel De Brett direct their gaze down High Street towards the busier Fort Street area just after midnight on New Year’s Eve.
The Upstair’s Bar at Hotel De Brett is rumoured to be one of the oldest Hotel Bars in Auckland, and during the 1990′s when High Street was “the place” for Friday and Saturday night partygoers, there were several bars packed at once on any weekend, with Cause Celebre, The Box, Papa Jack’s Voodoo Lounge with its Dragon Bar back room, Squid and Soul Bar only a few minute’s stagger away. High Street hasn’t been a nightlife destination for more than a decade, however, after the club scene moved to the fashionably seedier Karangahape Road.
These days, while High Street might still be a fashion mecca during daylight hours, Hotel De Brett appears very quiet just after midnight. Ironically, the hotel itself looks resplendent with its art deco inspired refurbishment.

Hungry? This was taken early evening near Fort Street, Aucklands seediest neighbourhood. The famous White Lady burger trailer is towed in everyday around midday and sits there amongst the local strip joints, massage parlours and cheap backpack accomodation, the perfect place for that 3am cheese burger should you be so inclined.
